The Original Naan Pizza, said to be the first of its kind, comes in four varieties: Cilantro Pesto; Margherita; Roasted Eggplant; and Spinach & Paneer Cheese. Hand-stretched, the new all-natural,
vegetarian Naan Pizza is fired in a clay Tandoor Oven at 1,000˚F.
Byrne Dairy (www.byrnedairy.com), Syracuse, N.Y., launches a line of extended shelf life (up to 90 days with refrigeration) milks and newly formulated flavored milks, opening up new warehousing and distribution opportunities. Processed under ultra-high temperatures, the products come in 8-, 12- and 16-ounce recyclable PET plastic bottles under the Byrne Dairy brand or as private label. Varieties include Chocolate (3.25% fat), Low Fat Chocolate (1% fat,), Low Fat Strawberry (1% fat), Fat-Free White, Low-Fat White (2% fat), Vitamin D, Iced Cappuccino and Iced Mocha Cappuccino. Flavored non-dairy creamers are also available. Longer shelf life results in fewer deliveries and less waste from out-of-code products that must be thrown away. The company says it can also create unique flavor profiles in batch samples, speeding launches in a cost-effective way.
Andrew & Everett (www.andrewandeverett.com), Camp Hill, Penn. debuts a variety of cheeses from self-sustaining family farms. Source-verified from farm to table, the cheeses are hormone- and gluten-free with no antibiotics or preservatives, and certified clone-free sourced. Packaging clearly defines the natural attributes of the products for consumers. Pre-sliced and shreds in 8-ounce packages have a suggested retail of $3.49 to $3.99. The bars have an SRP of $2.99 to $3.49.
Bove’s Café (www.boves.com), Burlington, Vt., launches a handmade lasagna with its meatballs and award-winning marinara sauce using a family recipe. Voted Best of the Best on the Food Network, the lasagna has no trans fat and no preservatives, and carries a suggested retail of between $8.99 to $9.99 for a two-pound package. A one-cup serving has 300 calories and 20 grams of protein.
Living Right Natural Foods Corp. (www.livingrightfoods.com), Toronto, introduces three varieties of Homestyle Multigrain Pierogies, made with multigrain flour and flax: Cheddar Cheese, Potato & Soy Bacon; Cheddar Cheese & Potato; and Cheddar Cheese, Potato & Broccoli. The 16-ounce packages have a suggested retail price of $3.99. Pre-cooked and ready in as little as 5 minutes, a serving of four pierogies has 2 grams of fiber, 8 grams of protein and 15% of the daily requirement of iron.
Blue Ribbon Restaurants (www.blueribbonrestaurants.com), New York City, debuts Naked Nuggets (www.shedthebread.com), billed as “The Planet’s First Grilled Chicken Nugget.” Fully cooked without breading and thus gluten-free, they are made with antibiotic-free hand-trimmed chicken breast. Said to have half the calories, a sixth the fat and twice the protein of a traditional breaded nugget, the nuggets were invented by brothers Bruce and Eric Bromberg, two French-trained chefs with nine popular restaurants in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Suggested retail for the nuggets, which come in a 12-ounce re-sealable pouch, is $6.99.
Putney Pasta (www.putneypasta.com), Brattleboro, Vt., adds Chicken Pomodora to its line of all-natural Skillet Meals. The item features chicken (fed a 100% vegetarian diet with no added hormones or antibiotics), broccoli, mozzarella cheese and bowtie pasta in a marinara sauce. It serves two and cooks in 10 minutes. SRP is $8.99 to $9.99.
Hood River, Ore.-based Turtle Island Foods (www.tofurky.com) launches marinated Tempeh. Instead of a plain cake of soybeans and grains, this organic, gluten free and 100% Vegan Tempeh has been pre-sliced thin and infused with gourmet sauces: Coconut Curry, Sesame Garlic and Lemon Pepper. Suggested retail for the 7-ounce pack is $3.99 to $4.29. A five-slice serving (90 to 140 calories depending on marinade) delivers 12 grams of protein and 5 grams of dietary fiber.
Scoma’s Restaurant (www.scomas.com), San Francisco, is rolling out a line of all-natural seafood cakes: San Francisco Style Crab Cakes, Pacific Sockeye Salmon Cakes, and Shrimp & Crab Cakes. The cakes have no preservatives or MSG, and all fish used is sustainably harvested, the company says. The Crab Cakes, featuring Dungeness crab, will come in a box with two 3.5-ounce entrée cakes plus sauce base with a suggested retail of $11.49. A box of eight 1-ounce mini cakes and sauce base have a suggested retail of $12.49. Both the Salmon Cakes, and the Shrimp & Crab Cakes, will come with two 3.5-ounce cakes per box, with a suggested retail of $8.99.
Blake’s All Natural Foods (www.blakesallnatural.com), Concord, N.H., introduces fancy comfort food with its three-item Farmhouse Mac & Cheese line: Cheese; Organic Veggies (with peas, carrots, broccoli and red peppers); and Organic Chicken with Organic Broccoli. The Cheese item features organic bowtie pasta and cheddar cheese topped with a breadcrumb topping. The 8-ounce package, with 19 grams of protein and 14 grams of fat per serving, has a suggested retail of $2.99. Organic Veggies, as well as Organic Chicken with Organic Broccoli, come in 8-ounce packages and have a suggested retail of $4.99.
Daregal Gourmet (www.daregalgourmet.com), Princeton, N.J., offers all-natural ready-to-use fresh frozen chopped herbs. Made with no salt or preservatives, the herbs are misted with a fine layer of vegetable oil to preserve their freshness and allow them to flow freely when shaken from their containers. They are available in Cilantro, Basil, Parsley, Dill, Oregano, and Original Blend (basil, oregano, rosemary, thyme, onion and garlic). Suggested retail for a 1.76-ounce container (about 3/4 cup) is $3.99.
Montpelier, Vermont-based Cabot Creamery (www.cabotcheese.coop), adds hand-rubbed cheddars to its line. A blend of herbs and spices encase the bars of cheddar for a strong, vibrant taste. The initial offering included Chili Lime and Tuscan; the most recent additions are Tiki Masala with Indian spices and Hot Buffalo Wing, promising extra-spice and extra-heat. There are a dozen 8-ounce bars to the master case. Suggested retail for the bars is about $6.50.
